The first amendment states the bill of rights. It was put into effect on December 15, 1791 These rights include, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of speech, press, assembly and to petition the government for a redress of grievances, and the implied rights of association and belief. These rights were set forth in order to prevent the government from having too much power. The US constitution was written in the same place the Declaration of Independence was signed with is now known as Independence Hall. In 1791 the first 10 amendments were added to the constitution. These rights were added to the constitution known as the first 10 amendments or bill of rights because the people did not want the government to become so powerful that it took away their sacred liberties.
